Gold into Money

The next morning, they were sitting at the table and Michael asked Bill, “How do we cash in the gold. I need to pay your share and some credit bills.”.

Bill said, “There is still an Assay Office in Nevada City.”.

That was the duty for the day. They had been working the Double Pick Mine for thirty days. Including the early finds, their gold total now stood at 123.2 ounces. Five lovely Mason jars full of gold. Those are something everyone should get to see and hold. Just to lift them and feel the weight and watch the gold shift like the sand in a very expensive hourglass. That was a wonderful experience.

Bill calculated that 123.2 ounces would bring them about $157,326. Michael had run up about $41,000 in bills on his credit card, mostly the stuff they bought at Sam’s. About another $300 in supplies. Bill’s basic salary for the month at $3,840. That left a very nice profit of $112,186. Bill now gets 30% of the profit or $33,655. That left Michael with a wonderful $78,530 for one month. That sure beats sitting on his front porch back in Nevada.

They left Blacky at the mine since he was now very comfortable there and could watch the place. Bill and Michael got in the truck for the short drive to Nevada City. Bill pointed out where the Assay office was. They walk in and Bill introduced him to Jingle or that is what they call Clem Wilkins; Bill’s guess was because he puts Jingle in the miner’s pockets.

Bill put the box of Mason Jars on the counter. They explained that Michael now owns the Double Pick Mine and Bill is the Foreman. They hope to be doing a lot of business with Jingle so they got to know each other a bit. Meanwhile, Jingle poured the gold into his scale to weigh it all, then back into the mason jars.

Then Jingle said you want to see something interesting. Michael said, “Sure always ready to learn more about this mining gig.”.

Jingle took them in the back room. There was a small cauldron type device and an assortment of things that looked like two-piece candle molds only made of iron. Jingle opened a few jars and poured 100 ounces into a very accurate eight-digit scale. Then he poured the gold and a couple of chemicals into the steel cauldron. He hit a lever and the inside of the unit became a blast furnace aiming at the cauldron. In about five minutes he skimmed the top of the liquid gold, shut down the fire and stood up one of the forms in a vice, it had the number 100 on it. Then using heavy thermal gloves and special long-handled tongs, he picked up the red-hot cauldron and poured the liquid gold into the mold. He removed the form with his heavy gloves and put it on a rack and let it sit for a few minutes. Then he grabbed the form and banged it open on the bench.
